What happens if the subscription stops

The five subscription states — what stops for your clients, what stops for you, and why your data stays put.

A subscription has five states, and they are not equally scary. One of them (Past due) stops nothing — you just need to fix the card. Two of them (Expired and Canceled) stop both your public page and your own access to your boards. This article says exactly what stops, when, and how to get it back.

The state is shown as a badge in the side panel of Settings → Workspace settings → Subscription & billing.

1. The five states

BadgeWhen it appearsPublic pageYour access to boardsWhat to do
Trialnew workspace, 14 daysworksfull (Pro level)pick a plan before it ends
Activeyou’re paying and it’s going throughworksfullnothing
Past duethe last payment failedworksfullfix the card now
Expiredthe trial ran out unpaid (or the debt was never paid)down (410)lockedpick a plan
Canceledthe subscription was cancelled and the period endeddown (410)lockedreactivate a plan

The short rule: Trial, Active and Past due = you’re working. Expired and Canceled = everything’s down.

2. “Past due” — still working, but fix the card

When Stripe fails to collect (expired card, insufficient funds, bank refusal) the state becomes Past due. This is a grace period:

  • the public page keeps taking bookings;
  • boards, schedule, money — all normal;
  • a warning strip appears under the top bar: There’s a problem with your payment with a Manage button;
  • the panel says “The last payment failed. Update your payment method to keep bookings running.”;
  • the main button becomes Fix payment.

What to do: Fix payment → add a valid card in Stripe’s portal. Retries are Stripe’s job, on Stripe’s schedule — not Mountify’s. If it’s never paid, the state eventually becomes Expired or Canceled, and then everything stops.

Mountify sends no email about a payment problem. The only in-product signal is the strip and the panel. Invoice and failed-payment notices come from Stripe to the subscription’s email address.

3. “Expired” and “Canceled” — what stops for your clients

Both states do the same thing on the outside: your public booking page closes.

  • Clients see “This page is temporarily unavailable” — “This business isn’t accepting online bookings right now. Please contact them directly to schedule an appointment.”
  • The links from your emails (managing a specific appointment) and the client area close too.
  • The widget embedded on your website shows the same thing.
  • No new online payments can be taken.

The wording is neutral — it never says “unpaid”.

4. “Expired” and “Canceled” — what stops for you

This is the big difference from older explanations: it’s not only new bookings that stop — the entire inside of every board stops.

  • Open a board and instead of the schedule you get a locked screen:
    • after a lapsed trial — Your trial has ended (“Pick a plan to open this board and keep accepting bookings.”);
    • after a cancellation — Subscription canceled (“This workspace’s subscription was canceled. Reactivate a plan to open the board again.”);
    • both carry a Choose a plan button.
  • So you have no access to the schedule, the board’s clients, Money, the catalog or the board settings.
  • Even if you reach something, any change is refused by the server.

Plan for this. If the subscription lapses in the middle of a working day, your front desk is left without a calendar. The end date is visible in advance (“Ends on {date}”).

5. What keeps working while it’s down

The lock is deliberately built so you can always pay:

WorksDoesn’t work
signing inthe inside of every board
the boards listthe public booking page
Subscription & billing (checkout, portal, add-ons)new bookings and payments
workspace settingsplan-locked features (CRM, for example)
team, roles and invitations
your personal profile and avatar
deleting the workspace

6. A trial simply expires — with no email

  • The trial is 14 days. Once a day (around midnight) a sweep moves lapsed trials into Expired.
  • The warning is in-app only: for the last 3 days the strip turns into a warning — “Only N days left in your trial — pick a plan to keep bookings running”.
  • After it lapses the strip says “Your trial has ended — bookings are paused. Pick a plan to continue.”

A second workspace from the same account starts straight in Expired — there is no trial there (see Start your trial).

7. A cancelled paid plan — access until the period ends

Cancelling stops nothing immediately:

  • the badge turns Canceled and the line under it reads “Ends on {date} — access stays until then”;
  • until that date everything works normally;
  • on that date the subscription ends and §3 + §4 kick in.

8. Your data is not lost

Nothing is deleted when a subscription stops — neither on a lapsed trial nor on a cancelled plan. Boards, services, resources, locations, clients, bookings, payments, reviews, packages and files all sit and wait.

The only thing that really deletes data is deleting the workspace — and that comes with a warning and a 30-day recovery window. Careful: deleting the workspace does not cancel the subscription — cancel first, delete second. See Cancel or pause.

9. How you come back

  1. Sign in to Mountify (signing in always works).
  2. Open Settings → Workspace settings → Subscription & billing — or press Choose a plan on the locked board.
  3. Pick a cycle and a plan and go through checkout.
  4. The panel shows “Updating your subscription…” for up to 45 seconds.

What returns by itself and what doesn’t:

Returns immediatelyNeeds a manual step
access to your boardsresources switched off by an earlier plan downgrade (re-enable from Catalog → {resource kind})
the public page at the same address
locations switched off by an earlier downgrade
the new plan’s features

If the subscription simply lapsed (rather than being downgraded), the system has not switched any of your resources off — precisely so you don’t come back to an empty board.

10. Common questions

How long is the grace period on a failed payment? There’s no fixed window in Mountify — it depends on Stripe’s retries. While the state is Past due, you keep working.

Do my clients get notified that the page is down? No. No client emails are sent about it.

Are next week’s bookings cancelled? No. They stay in the database. You just can’t see them until you pay.

Will I lose my page address (slug)? Not unless you delete the workspace.

Can I export my data while it’s down? Practically no — the board interiors are locked. Export what you need before you stop paying.

Do all boards lock, or just one? All of them. The subscription belongs to the workspace.

Will you charge me while it says “Expired”? No. There is no active subscription to charge.
